The Floor Lamp’s Small Footprint, Big Impact

“Whether decorating a living room, bedroom, or bath, stylish floor lamps provide a unique decorative element and a sense of drama. And they’re especially helpful in small spaces with low ceilings; while other furnishings may be squat or low to the ground, a tall floor lamp draws attention to the true height of the space.” – Architectural Digest

Though it may not get the publicity or social media love of its larger counterparts, the floor lamp’s role in the guest room can’t be understated.

Slender in form, but much, much larger in function.

In guest room design, space often comes at a premium – with the trend of smaller guest rooms continuing to grow.

“In the bigger cities rooms are becoming smaller, so effective and interesting use of space needs to be considered” writes HospitalityNet.org.

With this emerging trend, contract and hospitality designers are tasked with playing the part of puzzle master – determining where to lay out the client’s specified components like seating, storage, bedding and more.

As more visually heavy pieces command prime real estate, a smaller item like a floor lamp could become an afterthought – but every designer knows lighting is essential in setting a comforting, welcoming tone in a guest room space.

“Floor lamps are key for a small space — whether it’s a studio apartment or a suburban house’s sitting room — because they add light without the bulk of a table lamp and end table. They’re even better when they articulate and telescope, so you can adjust the light to shine where you need it.” – D.C. designer Sally Steponkus.

The floor lamp’s footprint combines with its versatility to make it truly invaluable – perfect for adding a sense of space to smaller rooms, while creating warmth and comfort in larger ones.

“Floor lamps also add a vertical dimension to a room’s décor, contrasting the horizontal lines of cocktail tables and upholstery,” writes ELLE DÉCOR’s Helen Yun.

“And for the space-challenged, a stand-alone number means you need not sacrifice precious square footage for an extra surface to support it”
